URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — Just one month after publishing his book, an Illinois author was sharing his work in Champaign County schools on Thursday.
Dr. Gilo Kwesi Logan was at Leal Elementary School in Urbana to share his book “Protecting a Dream: The Life and Legacy of Chief Bill Logan and His Historic Moments with Dr. King.”
However, there was more to it than just reading his book out loud. Students were actively engaged with skits, small group conversations, writing and reflection.
“Protecting a Dream” is about his father, the first African American police chief in Evanston. His father was also Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s bodyguard on two occasions when he came to Evanston.
“I tried to capture my father’s life, his legacy, in a manner that’s accessible to children through the process of telling stories, because typically children aren’t trying to read history books, but they will engage in the oldest art form, and that’s storytelling,” Logan said.
He also made a stop at Kenwood Elementary in Champaign on Thursday to spread his father’s legacy.
